Partner Spotlight: Backpack Buddies
What is Backpack Buddies? Georgetown Backpack Buddies is a non-profit organization whose mission is to ensure that food insecure children in GISD are provided with food over weekends and holiday breaks. Every week during the school year, Backpack Buddies volunteers assemble cases of food to feed qualifying students at every GISD campus.
How does Backpack Buddies support GISD students? Students in grades K-12 who qualify for Free/Reduced Lunch are eligible for Backpack Buddies (BPB) weekend meal packs. Packs are provided weekly to students and contain 8-9 nutritious food items to ensure their families are fed over the weekend. During the 2022-23 school year, BPB provided 32,618 food packs to food insecure students.
How can a student register for Backpack Buddies weekend meal packs? Families must fill out a Free/Reduced lunch application and indicate interest in assistance from the Backpack Buddies weekend meal program by checking the box in Skyward. You can pick up a Free/Reduced lunch application at any campus or access it online.
