In May, the Williamson County Deputies Association (WCDA) gave a brand new bike to 186 students at Purl Elementary, nearly one third of the school’s total enrollment, in partnership with St. David’s Round Rock Medical Center. in partnership with St. David’s Round Rock Medical Center. As part of a year-long initiative, students who had perfect attendance – meaning zero unexcused absences for the school year – got to go home with some new riding gear.
“While our goal is to ultimately boost student attendance rates, we want students to see that their hard work and dedication truly pays off,” Officer Charles Duvall, WCDA President said.
The initiative also provides an opportunity to educate students on bike safety, which is why St. David’s Round Rock fitted each student for and provided them with their own helmet.
“There are many benefits to this initiative outside of increasing attendance that touch the community as a whole,” Officer Duvall said. “It’s an opportunity for the Association to give back, bridge gaps between youth and law enforcement, and encourage kids to get out of the house and be active during the summer.”
