Elementary Students Celebrate at River Readers Ceremony

On May 2, students from every GISD elementary school gathered with their families and librarians to celebrate a strong finish of their year-long River Readers challenge.

The program, open to all students in 3rd-5th grade, challenges students to complete as many books as they can from the River Readers book list that is provided at the beginning of the school year. Every elementary librarian plays a part in carefully curating the 16 books that are assigned to readers.

Over the course of the 2023-24 school year, 81 3rd-5th graders successfully completed all 16 books in the challenge and were invited to attend the end-of-year ceremony.

“As a team, we believe passionately in a library program that challenges readers while fostering empathy and understanding of the world,” Purl Librarian Amy Simpson said. “River Readers is a testament to what we can do when we come together and work towards that shared goal.”
