Georgetown HS Takes No. 1 Spot in Austin American-Statesman Breazeale Cup

Every year, the Austin American-Statesman ranks all Austin-area high school athletic programs in a competition called the Breazeale Cup, named for longtime Statesman sports writer George Breazeale. Rankings are based on the number of points each sports program accrues based on their results throughout the year.

After winning the Cup for the first time in 2022-2023, 10 district titles and points in 17 different sports scored Georgetown a repeat for the 2023-2024 year.

“We are extremely proud of our high school athletic programs in GISD,” Athletic Director Jason Dean said. “We are very fortunate at both of our high schools to have great principals and leaders who understand how important extracurricular activities are to our students and this community.”

With a winning total of 92 points, Georgetown saw an impressive year in sports across the district. Some notable highlights include the Georgetown High School (GHS) girls soccer team finishing their season as district champions and regional finalists, the GHS boys swimming winning state, and both East View High School (EVHS) and GHS cross-country teams qualifying for state.

“Nearly 40% of our high school students indicate they feel the most connection to their school through athletics,” Dean said. “This accomplishment in the Breazeale Cup is a testament to what students can achieve when they feel supported by their school and community.”
