Eighth Graders Celebrate Veterans Day at the Field of Honor
For eight years now, the Georgetown Rotary Club has invited GISD eighth graders to the Field of Honor during the week of Veterans Day. Beyond walking around the field, students have the opportunity to participate in a station rotation that consists of a Veteran Panel, an American Revolution trunk demonstration, a Civil War trunk demonstration, and a tour of the more than 2,000 flags on the ground.
Eighth graders are specially selected for this opportunity because their U.S. history curriculum directly aligns to this interactive experience. Students are able to see examples of materials they have studied in their U.S. history classrooms and ask Williamson County Museum experts about the historical significance of each item.
The Veteran panel, which proudly included a GISD graduate this year, gives students a unique opportunity to hear firsthand accounts of service to our country and community, while also learning about career paths in the military.
“The flag tour gives students an opportunity to see the meaningful contributions that members of their own community have made to this country through all kinds of military service,” GISD Curriculum Coordinator Kelly Jones said. “Students are able to observe the honor and respect our community holds for our veterans.”
