Students Make Waves at SeaPerch Regionals, Two Teams Advance to International Competition

Updated May 19: At the International SeaPerch Competition on May 13, Ducks of the Caribbean from Benold Middle School took third place in the Team Video category.

On March 24th, GISD students from all over the district gathered for the 2023 Regional SeaPerch Competition. SeaPerch, a program funded by the GISD Education Foundation, is an underwater robotics program that teaches students basic engineering and science concepts as they work in teams to build underwater Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) from a provided kit.

“The most exciting thing about SeaPerch is probably building the robot,” Mahad Siddiqui, seventh grader at Wagner Middle School, said. “We can build off of base designs, but this year, our team chose to make our own design. There is freedom for creativity.”

For some students, the most exciting part of the program is the friendships that come out of it.

“My favorite part of SeaPerch is working with my teammates and seeing them every day,” Gabrielle Waters, sixth grader at Forbes said. “It really teaches us the importance of teamwork.”

Following the Regional Competition, two teams qualified to compete at the 2023 International SeaPerch Competition on May 13:

Ducks of the Caribbean, Benold Middle School
Captain Slow, Georgetown High School

We can’t wait to see what these teams accomplish!
