Small Change Leads to Big Impact: Transportation Team Raises Funds for Childhood Cancer Awareness
Every September since 2016, Georgetown ISD Transportation has joined campuses across the district in raising funds for Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF), a charity that raises money and awareness for childhood cancer.
“It’s always a tough ask for people to give money in August when we have all been off from work for a few months,” Penny Lovejoy, GISD bus driver said. “So, we set jars out at our front offices and campaigned for people to bring in their loose change.”
The campaign worked, and staff, community members and outside visitors dropped by their nickels, pennies and dimes…$533 worth, that is.
“The most we had ever raised was $215,” Lovejoy said. “It was a massive effort from everyone on our team, and I'm so proud of how we all stepped up for this cause.”
On top of the $533 raised, Volvo Cars USA pledged to match donations to ALSF during the month of September, bringing the transportation team’s total to a whopping $1,066.
Transportation also joined students and staff across GISD in the ALSF Million Mile, which encourages people across the country to get out and walk to shine a light on childhood cancer. By the end of September, transportation staff had collectively walked 1,965 miles and contributed to the more than 43,400 miles walked by the Georgetown community.
“There are a lot of children in our community who are fighting childhood cancer,” Lovejoy said. “And every September, we set off on our mission to get one step closer to a cure.”
