Former GISD Student-Athlete takes his Leadership Skills to the Collegiate Level

Georgetown High School (GHS) 2023 graduate Tucker Griffin’s athletic abilities shone through on the football field during his time as GHS quarterback, but his talents expand far beyond that. Griffin’s ability to lead and inspire those around him has made him a standout student-athlete, earning him the opportunity to play collegiate football – and, even a nomination for Student-Athlete of the Year.

Every year, student-athletes around the country are nominated for The Leadership Playbook Student-Athlete of the Year for exemplifying sportsmanship, positive leadership and collaborative teamwork.

“The nomination was a complete surprise to me,” Griffin said. “I felt really honored to be recognized in this way with so many talented and inspiring athletes.”

Those that know Griffin might argue that the nomination was anything but a surprise. As an active member of Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) and Leadership Track, a program at his church, Griffin involved himself in many leadership opportunities during his time at GHS both on and off the football field.

“Leadership is something that has always been natural to Tucker, even from a young age,” GHS Football Coach and Griffin’s father Chuck Griffin said. “I have been able to watch him grow in such an incredible way during his time in our athletic program.”

As a member of an athletic team in GISD, students are expected to be intentional about character development and leadership growth. One way that GHS football coaches implement this into their program is with their “Champions Notebook”. Every spring semester, the coaches come together and create a notebook containing lessons on topics such as leadership, attitude and commitment, that is then presented to players during classroom discussions.

“It’s important for people to know that there's more to being a student-athlete than playing a sport,” Griffin said. “We are taught so many valuable lessons in this program that we are expected to carry with us when we step off that field.”

Griffin is now carrying these lessons all the way to Liberty, Missouri, where he is playing football on a scholarship at William Jewell College.

“Playing college football has been a goal of Tucker’s since he was 4 or 5 years old,” Coach Griffin said. “To watch him succeed at this dream…I just couldn’t be more proud of the man that he is and the goals he continues to pursue.”
