GISD’s Carolyn Hise Named State Finalist for Nation’s Highest Presidential Award for Science and Math Educators

Georgetown High School (GHS) Mathematics Teacher Carolyn Hise has been announced as one of three Texas mathematics finalists for the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST) Award.

Each year, the President of the United States recognizes outstanding educators from across the country with the PAEMST awards, the nation's highest honors for teachers of mathematics, science, computer science, engineering, and technology applications. Awardees serve as models for their colleagues, inspiration to their communities, and leaders in the improvement of mathematics and science education.

“Carolyn is one of the most professional, thoughtful and intentional educators I’ve ever seen in the classroom,” GHS Principal Brian Johnson said. “The effort she puts into her students to ensure they are achieving at high levels, while also feeling cared for, is truly an inspiration and a model for others to follow.”

Hise celebrating her NBCT in February

Hise, a dedicated educator of 22 years, recently earned her National Board Certification (NBCT), the most respected professional certification available in education.

“I am honored to be recognized, and I share this honor with my amazing students, colleagues, and mentors who have shaped my journey as an educator, and I am grateful for the support of my family who encourages and inspires me every step of the way,” Hise said. “I continually reflect on my teaching to better meet my students’ needs, and each year brings a new opportunity to grow and become a better teacher than ever before. I hope this recognition shines a light on the meaningful work happening every day in classrooms throughout Georgetown ISD.”

As a Texas PAEMST finalist, Hise will now advance to the national level where her application will be reviewed by the National Selection Committee for PAEMST Awards.

“Mrs. Hise has been indefatigable in her efforts to help people really understand the concepts in my math classes, and through her independent study class, I have been able to prepare for collegiate level math.” GHS Senior Nathan Aaker said. “She truly cares and is constantly working to improve the way she teaches.”

2024-2025 national awardees are expected to be announced later this year. To learn more about the PAEMST Awards, visit https://paemst.nsf.gov/about.
