As the 2023-2024 school year comes to a close, we reflect on our most read stories of our latest spring semester.
1. GISD Launches New Grow Your Own Program, Celebrates First Cohort
[On May 15], GISD welcomed its first G.R.E.A.T. (GISD Recognizes and Elevates Aspiring Teachers) cohort with a signing event and celebration. Surrounded by family, peers and GISD staff, the first 13 members of the grow-your-own program set out to embark on a new educational journey…
2. East View will be the First School in Texas to Perform Harry Potter and the Cursed Child
East View High School (EVHS) is among the 29 schools across the nation to become the first in their state or territory to perform the high school edition of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child outside of Broadway.
3. A+FCU Makes Donation to Pay Off Student Meal Balances in Georgetown ISD
Georgetown ISD received a donation from A+ Federal Credit Union in Georgetown to pay off lunch balances for students at four campuses across the district in the amount of $1,138.
4. GISD Campuses Receive 2023 CREST Award for Counseling Programs
Six campuses in Georgetown ISD were recognized with the CREST (Counselors Reinforcing Excellence for Students in Texas) award from the Texas School Counselor Association (TSCA) for their outstanding counseling programs: Benold Middle School, East View High School, Forbes Middle School, Mitchell Elementary School, Purl Elementary, and Tippit Middle School.
5. GISD GAP Principal Appointed to Texas Juvenile Justice Board
Governor Greg Abbott has appointed nine people to the Texas Juvenile Justice Board, including Georgetown Alternative Program (GAP) Principal Stephanie House for a term set to expire on February 1, 2025.
6. AVID “Tried-and-True” Program Brings New Opportunities to High School Students
In its first year at East View High School, AVID – Advancement Via Individual Determination – has made a profound impact on the school. The program, a four-year elective course, is a transformative educational approach designed to empower students with the skills and tools necessary to achieve their dream of going to college.
7. Elementary Students Celebrate at River Readers Ceremony
On May 2, students from every GISD elementary school gathered with their families and librarians to celebrate a strong finish of their year-long River Readers challenge.
8. Experience Dyslexia: An Impactful Simulation for Teachers
Staff across Georgetown ISD (GISD) are experiencing some of the challenges and frustrations that people with dyslexia face through Experience Dyslexia, a hands-on learning disabilities simulation.
9. Ford Elementary Students Showcase Projects at Science Fair
Students at Ford Elementary got to showcase their projects during a STEM fair on January 17. Students were paired up with judges — community members, parents and staff volunteers — to explain their projects and the critical thinking behind them.
10. Success in Bloom: More than 200 Students Test for Floral Design Certification
January 30-31, Georgetown High School (GHS) hosted more than 200 high school students for a Texas State Florists' Association (TSFA) Floral Design Certification Test. Each student is given a bundle of flowers and fresh materials to complete a floral arrangement with a symmetrical design and a boutonniere in one hour.
