Wolf Ranch Students Install Fourth GISD Mural Downtown
Wolf Ranch Elementary is now the fourth campus to join the GISD Student Mural Project in collaboration with the City of Georgetown Arts & Culture Board. Last week, students installed their mural, titled Lead, Grow, Serve Our Community, alongside three existing GISD student murals.
The project kicked off in 2021 with Georgetown High School now-graduate Peyton Vega’s mural design, Everybody Deserves Kindness. Be Your Own Person by then-Forbes Middle School student Kelsie Cargill and Spread Some Sunshine by East View student Jordan Erkie were added to the wall located behind Tejas Meat Supply in 2022 and 2023, respectively.
“We chose the theme ‘Lead, Grow, Serve’ for the mural to reflect GISD’s mission statement and share it with the community,” Wolf Ranch Art Teacher Jami Moore said. “We were so excited to be the first elementary school chosen to do this project and work with the Arts & Culture Board.”
Moore and her co-facilitator, Wolf Ranch Art Teacher Amber Luther, were accepted to join the project in October of 2023. They selected 16 students to draw up ideas for the mural, and the students ultimately voted on a design that would represent “leadership, service, community and growth,” said Moore.
In January of 2024, students presented their design and a powerpoint presentation to the Arts and Culture Board for approval, and by May, they were bringing their design to life.
“Working together to make the mural was fun because it wasn't just one person's opinion on what we should do, it was all of ours,” fourth grader Presley Soldan said. “I am actually sad now that it’s over because I loved working on it.”
The long-term goal of the GISD Student Mural Project is to add to the wall every year until it is filled with pieces designed by students.
“This project is a result of collaboration between our district and the city, and it’s a perfect example of student-centered work: Students create the idea, present their ideas to the board for feedback, make revisions, and then execute their ideas in a piece of public art that gives back to the community,” GISD Fine Arts Director Carol Watson said. “It’s exactly what we are talking about when we refer to student voice, choice, collaboration, and engagement.”
