GISD Staff Members present on Bridges Program at National Conference

October 18-21, Bridges 18+ Coordinator Eden Guthrie and Special Education Transition Coordinator Abbey Kelly traveled to Reno, Nevada to present on the GISD Brides 18+ program and Bridges Boutique at the National Division of Career Development and Transition (DCDT) Conference.

In their presentation, Guthrie and Kelly highlighted how the Bridges program not only prepares students for the future through connecting them with work in the community, but students also run their own boutique with their teachers. Students suggest items for the boutique, learn to make those items and then sell them in the store.

More than 60 conference participants from all over the country attended Guthrie and Kelly’s presentation.

“It was wonderful to be able to share the story of our Bridges students and their boutique," Guthrie said. “Many attendees expressed curiosity and interest about our program, which led me to believe our success here in Georgetown will be spread across the country so that even more young adults with disabilities will be empowered to own a business and learn job skills for a successful and independent future.”

The Bridges Boutique is open Wednesday - Friday, 9:30am-1:30pm (closed 11:30am-12:30pm for lunch) on regular school/business days. You can view the boutique’s latest inventory at www.facebook.com/TheBridgesBoutique.
