Our Top Ten Stories of 2024
As we ring in a new year, let’s reflect on our some of our biggest stories from 2024.
1. GISD Launches New Grow Your Own Program, Celebrates First Cohort
GISD welcomed its first G.R.E.A.T. (GISD Recognizes and Elevates Aspiring Teachers) cohort with a signing event and celebration. Surrounded by family, peers and GISD staff, the first 13 members of the grow-your-own program set out to embark on a new educational journey…
2. East View will be the First School in Texas to Perform Harry Potter and the Cursed Child
East View High School (EVHS) is among the 29 schools across the nation to become the first in their state or territory to perform the high school edition of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child outside of Broadway.
3. Georgetown HS Takes No. 1 Spot in Austin American-Statesman Breazeale Cup
Every year, the Austin American-Statesman ranks all Austin-area high school athletic programs in a competition called the Breazeale Cup, named for longtime Statesman sports writer George Breazeale. Rankings are based on the number of points each sports program accrues based on their results throughout the year.
4. Six GISD Students Named National Merit Semifinalists
The National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) has announced Semifinalists in the 70th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. Among the 16,000 national semifinalists are six students from Georgetown High School (GHS): Seniors Nathan Aaker, Lindsey Bottoms, Jacob Kruse, Michael Shehan, Elias Stevenson and Lily Vaughn.
5. GISD Names Teachers and Employees of the Year
Georgetown ISD celebrated teachers and staff during its Employee Recognition Ceremony on Tuesday, May 7. At the event, the district recognized employees with 20+ years of service in GISD, retirees, and teachers and employees of the year. This event is held annually in conjunction with Teacher Appreciation Week.
6. Ballet Folklórico: A Program that Flourishes with Every New Year
In 2014, GISD Ballet Folklórico started as an after-school club at Mitchell Elementary with 12 students. By the second year, the program had drawn in more than 30 students, just at that campus.
7. A+FCU Makes Donation to Pay Off Student Meal Balances in Georgetown ISD
Georgetown ISD received a donation from A+ Federal Credit Union in Georgetown to pay off lunch balances for students at four campuses across the district in the amount of $1,138.
8. GISD Campuses receive 2023 CREST Award for Counseling Programs
Six campuses in Georgetown ISD were recently recognized with the CREST (Counselors Reinforcing Excellence for Students in Texas) award from the Texas School Counselor Association (TSCA) for their outstanding counseling programs: Benold Middle School, East View High School, Forbes Middle School, Mitchell Elementary School, Purl Elementary, and Tippit Middle School.
9. Teachers at Mitchell Team Up to Transform the Pre-K Experience
For Mitchell Elementary Pre-K Teachers Nicole Jones and Melanie Smith, the power of teacher collaboration has transformed their two classrooms into one space where learning and growth thrive. By working together and combining resources, the two have created a unique and enriching experience for the school’s youngest learners.
10. A Full Circle Moment: Recent GISD Grad Joins Future Ready Complex Staff
After graduating from Georgetown High School (GHS) in May of 2024, Jayden Pettigrew has stepped back into the halls of Georgetown ISD (GISD), this time as a dedicated staff member. Having spent his entire educational journey within GISD from the time he was in PreK at Cooper Elementary, Pettigrew has brought a unique perspective and a sense of familiarity to his new role at the GISD Future Ready Complex (FRC).
